Why Should I Organize My Home?

If you’re wondering, “Why should I organize my home?” you’ve come to the right place.

Social media is filled with images and videos of perfectly curated homes. It seems TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook have exploded with reels and photos related to organizing.

Take a look at Khloe Kardashian’s insanely organized pantry, complete with glass jars and containers for every little thing. There’s even individual cookie jars, with each cookie meticulously stacked in order to make it all look beautiful on a shelf.

People couldn’t stop talking about this pantry and drooling over it.

Being constantly bombarded by all these images of the “perfectly organized home” can put a lot of pressure on you.

You’re probably thinking, “My house doesn’t look like that.”

Here’s a little secret: mine doesn’t either!

In fact, very few people have homes that are THIS meticulously organized.

Resisting The Pressure to Be Perfect

Have you ever looked through a catalog or browsed Pinterest, only to see images like this?

It’s beautiful, isn’t it? Absolutely calming and lovely to look at, but frustratingly unattainable.

Who actually owns just three dresses? What guy has enough room to hang all his shirts one foot apart on the closet rod?

And what person only owns two pairs of shoes?

These images simply do not show a realistic closet - which is a large reason why you feel so frustrated,

Of course you can’t achieve this look; you have a normal amount of clothes and belongings!

At the end of the day, while these spaces are indeed beautiful and satisfying to look at, they’re neither practical nor realistic.

We’re normal, everyday people living in our homes - and that’s okay! No matter how hard you try, your home will NEVER be perfect.

Why?

Because perfect doesn’t exist.

It’s not real.

Perfection is an age-old myth that creates more pain than joy, more confusion than calm, and more angst than creative productivity.
— Dr. Jessica Zucker

And another thing: I can guarantee you Khloe Kardashian did not organize her pantry herself, nor does she sit there and meticulously place every Oreo every time she buys more. She’s paying someone else to do it.

The average, everyday person does not have the time, money, or energy to keep up with such a meticulous task.

Your house is your home, not a “for sale” house left untouched and permanently staged by realtors.

So Why Get Organized Then?

You shouldn’t want to get organized in order to keep up with the Joneses, impress your family, or be just like Khloe Kardashian.

If your goals have anything to do with OTHER people, scrap them!

As a professional organizer, I help people get organized for several reasons:

  • So they can feel GOOD in their home

  • To make their lives easier, less stressful, and more efficient

  • To lighten the load their possessions have put on their shoulders

In professional organizing, the goal is ALWAYS to make the client’s life easier.

A well-organized bathroom and closet can speed up your morning routine, meaning you get ready efficiently and out the door on time - without being late because you can’t find X, Y, or Z.

A well-organized office can help you be more productive during the day.

A well-organized kitchen can make it more accessible, meaning your disabled dad can finally use ALL OF THE SPACE without having to ask for help.

A well-organized fridge saves you money, as it can prevent produce from going bad because you can finally see it and won’t forget it’s there!

A well-organized home means you won’t waste time digging around for lost items. Clean-up becomes a breeze because every item has a home.
